Altered
~~Publisher's BEST SELLER in 2011~~

For eighteen-year-old Jenna Larson, spending the summer falling in love should be normal. But when she discovers a cursed book capable of secret writings and a hidden message, finding a way to alter the curse to save a life changed everything. Only Jenna's choice may have already chosen her.

~~Inside teaser scene~~

For a moment, I stood my ground, trying to keep myself focused. My hand trembled as I reached toward him. His touch was gentle and all I could think of was his hand in mine. The smell of leather on his skin started to play with my emotions as the look in his eyes burned into me. Snap out of it! I shouted in my head. I had to put my priorities in order. Days ago he warned me to stay indoors. That was the night of the robbery. He was a criminal, he was cursed, and he could not die. What in the world was I doing falling for him? Wasn't I just determined to wait for him to give me a reason? But the longer I looked into his eyes, the more reason was beginning to lose. His dangerous edge, fringed with a gently side was like an addictive poison running through my veins. I was caving in.

~~Excerpt~~

“Tell me your secrets?” he asked in a low voice as he pulled his hand away.

I shifted my eyes from his. Can he possibly read my mind? Does he know what I found in the cabin and that I'm hiding it away from Pops? Or were my actions that easy to read he already knew how I was beginning to feel about him? Was it this? Was it that? Was it...? Clearing my throat, I adjusted my expression and then looked his way.

“What are you talking about?” I spoke each word slowly, bracing myself for what he might answer.

“Your fears...your likes...what you enjoy doing in your spare time. What did you think I meant?” He looked puzzled.

Relief swept through me. “Oh...” I exhaled, “my fears. Well, I think what I fear the most is something happening to Pops. I worry about him being all alone. It’s not like he can’t take care of himself. I just don’t know what I would do if I lost him, that’s all. Oh, and snakes. I detest snakes. And...let’s see, my likes. I like coming here to New Roads for Pops, of course, and because it gives me a break. It’s my change of scenery and a chance to have a vacation. I’ve never been anywhere but Orlando and here. But you wouldn’t know that would you? I’ll bet you’ve seen lots of places with moving around a lot.”

He shrugged. “Yeah, but it’s no big deal. I’d rather stay in one place, if I could.” He was quiet for a moment and I wondered just how many places he’d been. “So, what else do you like?”

“I like when people don’t mind being themselves. You know, not pretend to be something they’re not just to impress someone.” I paused, searching his eyes. A faint grin crossed his lips. “Anyway...what about you, what are your fears?”

“Nope, not yet,” he said. “You didn’t finish the last question. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?”

The look on his face was pleasant, waiting for my response. At the moment, what I enjoyed doing in my spare time is exactly what I’m doing now—sitting here talking with him, but I surely couldn’t be so bold and admit it.

“There doesn’t seem to be much spare time with school, a part-time job at the mall, and the one sport I play, volleyball. But unlike some people my age, I don’t smoke and I don’t drink. I mean, why throw your life away like that. I just don’t understand. I’ve seen too many people get into trouble when they’re drunk or do some real dumb things. That’s not my style. Anyway, I guess if I had to choose what I enjoyed doing in my spare time, it would be...spending the day with a friend.” There, I said it in a roundabout way, even if it did sound typical-boring. Still, spending the day with a friend was a perfect answer, and in a sneaky way, it applied to him, too. Only he might not be aware of it as of yet.

“You sound too good to be true,” he teased.

“That would depend on how good you think my truth is.” I grinned.

He nodded, smiling, and I figured he agreed or at least was considering it.

“Okay, my turn,” I began. “What are your fears?”

He narrowed his eyebrows pretending to think of the perfect answer. “Fears, huh?” He responded with a mischievous grin. “What if I told you I had none?”

“You’ve got to be kidding, right? No fears? You can do better than that. Everybody has at least one.” I held up one finger as I spoke. “Even I had more than one.”

He leaned his head back, staring at me through unsmiling lips. My mind scrambled, wondering if I said something that offended him. Patiently, I waited for whatever his answer might be.

“Okay, just one then. I fear...someone knowing all of my secrets.”

Laura Burks begins her writing career with a mid-teen suspenseful Paranormal. What could a teenager know about real love? And what would a young high school girl be willing to dare for her first romance? Can she remember to stick by her Grandfather’s rules…or will she give in to a bad boy’s flirty eyes?

This book really touched the cockles of my heart, and drew me back to the days of my own very first affaire of the heart. It is a wonderful story of magical romance, promises, love and trust.

B
eyond 5 Star rating! "Altered is everything I could have asked for and more! Laura Burks delivers paranormal, suspense, and a touch of romance in a major way. It is by far one of the best written, most creative novels I have read. Altered is beyond 5 stars!"

Altered is an amazing story, one which kept me guessing all the way through. I loved that this was not your typical paranormal title. The paranormal aspect of this novel was more subtle, more disturbing. Let's talk about Louisiana and a curse from a deal gone wrong. This title makes you think twice before shortchanging someone you have made a deal with. Altered makes you think again before deciding to have your cake and eat it too.

I enjoyed reading about the budding romance between Jenna and Jess. It was slow, sensual, and deliberate. Jenna and Jess would let each other know where their heart was. There were no games. No drama. It was honesty in it's purest form. To just be with each other was enough. Every hand held, every gaze in each other's eyes, every secret shared was monumental. They lived in the moment with each other. I was often taken back to the days when my young heart was filled with that much innocence, when I experienced my first throws of love. The romance in Altered will make your heart leap more than once in fond remembrance.

Burks kept surprising me at every turn of the page. I would have it in my head where I thought the story would go next, and it never did. I was glued to this book. Quite literally. Every second I had, I whipped out one of my devices - HTC smartphone, iPod Touch, Kindle, HP Touchpad - to finish a chapter or read one more sentence. Altered is just that good of a novel! Laura Burks writing style is flawless. I don't remember seeing a typo nor did I have to reread a paragraph to understand what was going on. She kept her plot tucked away nicely, waiting on the right moment to reveal information to the reader, and as a result, everything fell smoothly into place.

Laura Burks is a seriously talented author and very creative to boot. Altered, her debut novel, is a hit and a personal favorite. I can't wait to read more novels from Laura! :)

A
ltered--A Teenage Girl’s Must-Have!
   5 Stars!!
Laura Burks' first novel Altered is a captivating bundle of mystery, suspense, and forbidden love. I would definitely recommend this book for young teenage girls, especially if they also enjoy the book series Twilight.

This novel is told in first person. That allows the readers to really understand and feel Jenna’s emotions. The readers can relate to her feelings as well. All teenage girls have felt their heart jump and their bellies go nuts with butterflies whenever they’re talking to someone they like. If the story was told in third person, I think the book wouldn’t have been as spellbinding and relatable.

Altered always keeps you reading. You have no choice but to read, it’s too riveting. You’re forced to keep guessing, and when you think you know what happens next, the author always manages to surprise you. It’s one of those novels that once you start reading, you can’t stop.

A
ltered, surprisingly, is Laura Burks debut novel
. If this is her first offering, I can't wait to see what she gives us in the future! Laura Burks has a knack for developing tension. Laura has set it up perfectly for a sequel, it'll be interesting to see what happens next! Highly recommended if you enjoy Young Adult fiction, may appeal to those who enjoyed The Secret Circle.

This novel is a really unique take on YA romance.
It's paranormal, but it's done in a really refreshing way. As a fan of YA romances, it was nice to see someone take a fresh approach to this genre. Jenna is a relatable heroine that makes great company throughout the story. She's mature and responsible and has a great relationship with her grandfather, Pops. Jess is a hero that anyone would fall for. He's beautiful and has a personality that I think most girls wish for in a man. He's also got the classic tortured past, but it's not what you normally would see or expect from a YA hero. The writing is beautifully done and the reader can easily get swept up in the emotions of each scene and really feel involved in the story. There's also wonderful descriptions of the Louisiana setting and of course that's something I appreciate. This is a CLEAN YA novel, and there's nothing in it at all that parents should worry about having their children read. I think that this is a great novel that adds something fresh to its genre and I recommend it to anyone looking for a YA to read.

Amazing new author and novel!! Wow! I loved this book! The plot was so original and engaging. I found myself being so immersed into the book and it was really hard to put down. Jenna is very easy to relate to, the typical teenager who blends in and was just average. You really watch her grow through the book and you get the see her become a strong woman who finds the strength she needs to do the right thing. I also enjoyed the back stories of Jess and Annie and how everything intertwined with Jenna and her grandfather's own history. This book can easily be read by anyone 14+. There was a love story, but it had a very G rating. It was the clean and cute young love stroy that every girl wants and thus its appeal. It was excellent and though it was a debut novel, you would never know. Laura Burks did a great job with this novel and I really want to read more from her.

Unique and engaging! A refreshing YA Paranormal romance!
Let's start by saying the idea for Altered was pretty amazing. I love my Young-Adult with high doses of romance, paranormal, and mystery. Altered had all of that. The romance was overflowing, the paranormal aspects were creepy and dark, and the mystery was interesting. There were curses, eerie dreams, a love interest with a shady past, and a book that started it all. I'm positive readers will be drawn into this story from the start and won't stop reading until the very last page. Overall Altered was a good story, showcasing all of the fantastic reasons why we love the Young-Adult genre without falling victim to uniformity. It was unique and engaging! I would absolutely recommend Altered to YA readers!

"Hearing her name started it all..."
Reading that first line on the book summary started it all for me. I love when I can gush about a book! From the first moment Jenna sees Jess to the very end, the book has you anxious for what is coming next. There are so many occurrences that make up this story, I don't want to spoil the reading adventure by giving away too much. So, I won't. The author has a magical way of engaging you in her story. The superb writing makes it effortless to visualize every moment as it unfolds. This is not your typical paranormal romance. There are no vampires or werewolves. Altered brings you something entirely original and intriguing. Add the curse to an already mysterious and spooky Louisiana setting and you have a story that is impossible to put down. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a sequel to this one. I'm not ready for the story to end.

I loved the way the characters are portrayed.  Jenna is a sweet, caring girl who is willing to give herself to help others.  She has a great relationship with her grandfather.  Jess is handsome and mysterious yet gentle.  He was addicting to Jenna and I found him to be the same way.  I kept looking forward to the parts he was in. This is Laura’s first book and I would love to see more from her.  I loved it and could not put it down.  The story held your interest and was easy to read.  It contains a lot of action, romance and adventure.  A sequel to this would be great too- I would love to see what the future holds for Jess and Jenna.  A definite must read!!

ltered was exciting! The first person writing from Jenna's point of view had me feeling what she felt. I could picture Jess - handsome, exciting and daring. The paranormal and mystery element had me turning pages well past midnight. A must read!

Altered
is a compelling novel that grabs the reader from the very beginning. 5 stars! The story is told by Jenna in a first-person point of view. This allows the reader to really feel Jenna's fears, concerns, and desires. The rich, descriptive writing allows readers to clearly visualize the setting and events of the story. Altered is a wonderfully written combination of romance and the paranormal. Readers age fourteen and older who enjoy these genres will really enjoy this book.

Laura Burks has a true gift with words. Altered is a compelling, suspenseful, page turning book full of unexpected twists and turns. The descriptions of the setting and characters are life-like and believable. The story line was well developed and fast paced. I was unable to put it down! I am definitely looking forward to more by this author.

Great first novel--looking forward to more from Laura Burks! This book is a great read for someone looking for romance peppered with mystery. What begins as a straight-forward summer romance soon evolves into an eerie tale of past events with a touch of the supernatural. The love story appeals to anyone who remembers that first special feeling of attraction, while the unusual characters keep mystery fans turning the pages to the end. Looking forward to more from this talented author.

Nothing Short of Amazing! 5 stars  Jenna Larson is an eighteen year old, who tends to leave typical teenage trouble to the other teenagers, relying on her sweet and fun-loving side to get through most days. She's looking forward to spending the summer in a small town with her grandfather, who is also known as Pops. When Jenna's curious, high spirited side, discovers a mysterious book filled with blank pages, she thinks nothing of it. Until words begin to appear, bringing with them a curse from another time and putting the whole town and her Pops in danger. Yet, it also brings with it a budding love. Can she alter the curse to save her Pops and her new love?

There were times when the anticipation of what would happen next had my stomach tight with fear, other times a laugh out loud and a few crying spells along the way too. Ms. Burks' ability to bring you into this novel is nothing short of amazing. Her writing style and finesse have you transfixed on Jenna's world, not just wanting, but needing to encounter whatever it was that Jenna was about to face, cheering her on.

This is a wonderful novel that will appeal to both the young adult as well as the cross over to adult. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and I tip my hat to Ms. Burks for her fine showmanship of her writing skills in her debut novel. I can't wait to read the next...sequel.
~~ C. Elizabeth - author of Absolute Obsession.

This was a great book. Good characters, great writing, original unique plot and a very nice romance. The only negative?? I finished it too fast and it seems to wrap up at the end so I'm thinking no sequel?? I'd really like to read more Jenna and Jess! Well, here's hoping....

Delicious! 5 stars!  This was a super fun read for me. I'm from South Louisiana and so I could picture exactly what was going on and the places that were described in the book. But, beyond that the story was fun and easy to get "hooked" on! I immediately loved the characters and the sweet forbidden love story. I'm a huge paranormal fan and I thought this was one of the most creative and original stories that I've read in awhile. I got to meet Laura at a book signing and wish her many more successes!
